Family Life……

At the beginning of what’s likely to prove a short career at HD, I was immediately put through a rather long winded diatribe at the very beginning of my “new recruit” orientation. The diatribe lasted some 45 minutes and was joined with a short film. The subject of all of this was how we, as new members of the HD family……… don’t need a Union.
“ All the Union wants is to collect dues.” we were told…….and told again.
“ And besides…The Home Depot Corporation, through your managers and supervisors, will take care of all loyal family members with no need of outside interference”…..in house solutions are best and are dues free was the word spoon fed us over and over.
Sounded pretty good I thought, might be a good company to work for…. Well yesterday one of those supervisors came to “take care of me”.

“ Rich, we have to cut some hours and will have to send some people home early….you see the store didn’t do so well last week and we have to make up for it .”….a poor week being one that only pulls in 60 – 70 thousand dollars a day. And so four of us went home three hours early saving the company…or family… a whopping $120.00 in U.S. greenbacks while instilling in me some pride in the fact that I could help my “new family” in such a meaning full way. It worked out well as I had a little tile job to do and was having a hard time finding an extra moment to get on over to Lowes to buy my tile. You see, my new family doesn’t offer an employee discount, yet Lowes regularly sends me substantial coupons to successfully attract family members like me into the store……

Having said all this I would like it known I am definitely not a disgruntled employee….I have fun at my job…..but as a loyal American, I might urge you to shop at Ace Hardware at every opportunity……

And I’m thinking that as we have no Union there is no one to prevent me from maybe offering them $30 bucks one day next week to let me leave early during a busy spell…..I’m sure they could use the dough , and I can go set those tile….
