Escaping the Heat

It was warm today and pleasantly so . I wore my shorts and didn’t need to wear a sweater in the house for the first time in a while .

I’ve known cold . As a young kid I started out life in a London flat that had no central heating but instead burned coal in the living room until regulations forced the change to an electric heater. It was our only source of winter heat apart from the kerosene heater in the bathroom lit only when it was time for a bath. Later I spent my life in N.H. skating and skiing and catching fish through holes drilled through four feet of ice and on Sept. 17, 1973 I earned the title of Blue Nose given sailors who’ve manned a ship that’s crossed over the Arctic Circle . I’ve known cold.

But today was warm and pleasantly so and I wore my shorts and didn’t need to wear a sweater in the house and that’s been a rare treat as of late as its been the coldest winter I’ve experienced in Florida in 23 years. I was thinking that the rest of the world wouldn’t understand that nothing feels colder than a long term resident of Florida when the thermostat in the house drops to 62 degrees but I might have been wrong on that …..

Few days ago I followed a van with Ottawa licence plates  down the road and into the Walmart parking lot and pulled into the adjoining spot. We both got out of the vehicles at the same time and so I asked

” Down here to escape the heat are ya ? ”

” No shit , I’m freezing ” he said

And I didn’t feel so wimpy after all …
