A Rose….by any other name

My name….I mean look at it….Berthiaume. Its indecipherable for Gods Sake. Not a living soul can pronounce it and my Grandmother in fact often informed me that I myself mispronounced it.  Well as I’ve spent an entire life with other people struggling over it I found it quite a surprise that just about everyone with whom I attended a monthly rifle match this past year had no problem correctly wrapping their tongues around it.

Four months ago however we changed venues and now shoot with a small bore club at some other town. Very professional style with match scores and news letters mailed to you so you can jeer or tear etc.etc.    Well anyway, when the first score sheet and newsletter came there was my name along with the correct score I earned
                                                                     Rich Berthiaump  –  1568
“That a consonant or something on the end there?” I’m asking myself
So at the next match I point it out to the powers that be and am told….
” Sorry about that Rich…we’ll fix that up right now”……………they didn’t, of course
So at the next match I point it out to the powers that be and am told….

” Sorry about that Rich…we’ll fix that up right now”               ……..they didn’t, of course…and so this time I emailed a reminder before the scores got posted in the forlorn hope it may do some good.
Two days ago last matches scores arrived  addressed to Rich Berthiaume,    no consonant, and in the envelope was a note urging me to notice that the spelling error has been dutifully  fixed, and many sorry’s were in the offering……  And there I am posted next to my score for all the shooting world to see…….Rich Berthiaump….with the consonant.                               If the torment could just end there, I’d live with it as I’ve lived with the mispronunciation all my life. But an hour ago I answered the phone to a man with a question……..
” This the Rich Berthiaump that knows about old .22 rifles?”
“Yep, Rich Berthiaumep here,   what can I do for ya?”
