For the second time I’ve seen my little town devastated by hurricane force winds but that ugliness is over powered by beautiful people . Like the young enlistees of the National Guard who’ve left family and homes to come here and help or members of the Red Cross who’ve done likewise . Or the lady cooking breakfast in front of a condo for those that don’t have the means . All help is good help …. and I thank them all .
The other day we watched a group of ” immigrants” arrive at the house across the street to temporarily repair the hurricane damaged roof . They didn’t saunter , they walked like men with a purpose and quickly carried heavy roofing materials up the ladders and got the job done . And I swear to Christ some of them were wearing Martha’s Vineyard T shirts .
Now it may be true I have some prejudice towards people from Martha’s Vineyard but I’m willing to turn a blind eye at a time like this . The wife is an “immigrant” who may well have been eligible to have been invited to visit Martha’s Vineyard at one time and she coincidentally happens to be married to an immigrant , so it’s possible we both have a blinder eye than most .
My wife arrived here in 1988 and yesterday after all these years she finally collected her very first social benefit from the American tax payers . After waiting in a long line she received a tarp to cover her damaged roof along with a case of purified water and a chicken salad sandwich .
She deemed it pretty good pay after contributing to America for 34 years .
