We walked into a traditional Colombian take out food joint just around the corner from the house the other day to be pleasantly surprised. First by the quality of the food and secondly the amount of it received for the peso equivalent of $3.09 per lunch purchased.
Another surprise of the meal is typical of some of the weird shit that should be expected in daily South American life . The nice fresh fruit juice that comes with the meal for instance . You’d be surprised too if you found it packed in a thin plastic bag sealed with a knot tied in it creating the need to be creative in order to get it into a glass.
There’s some remodeling going on two doors down and after that lunch a horse drawn cart parked in front of our house to unload building materials for the re modelers. Once unloaded I was stunned to see attached behind the seat a licence plate from my own home state of New Hampshire. The driver was equally surprised when I showed him a coffee table book of New Hampshire.
Having found that licence plate years ago in some trash he hauled to the dump he was up to that time unaware of where New Hampshire was . This nice little surprise , like endless surprises I experience here, created another excuse for what Colombians do well ….. take the time for pleasantries and a chat .
